Practice: Alleviating Anxiety

Wim Hoff method is one of the best and simplest ways people are finding to alleviate anxiety.  This link offers a comprehensive description of how to breathe, cold therapy, and more.

Learning how to deal with anxiety is something that we all need to do in constructive ways in order to be resilient. This huge challenge we are facing is giving us a huge opportunity to learn new skills. Here is a video with very interesting, helpful, and practical solutions.

This article “6 Easy Behavioral Interventions For Anxiety” is probably the best and most detailed about dealing with anxiety I reviewed. This information is also on the video above.

This article has a number of great suggestions about how to deal with anxiety such as laughter yoga, list making and deep breathing.

Buddhist teacher Tara Brach talks about meditation and mindfulness helping with anxiety about the Corona Virus in this article.

This article describes why it is hard to fight the anxiety around Corona Virus pandemic–in case you want some validation about why you are experiencing anxiety. Even the most centered of people, including meditation teachers and Christian leaders are feeling the stress. Uncertainty is one of the biggest contributors to anxiety.

I highly recommend taking a look at the article I wrote about healing the vagus nerve which you can find here. This gives you so many suggestions as to prevent anxiety, and create the conditions in your body and environment that can heal anxiety.

This article by Beth Moore gave me some great reassurance about how one time I prayed over a friend who was experiencing a lot of anxiety. “Help her realize that sometimes bad things happen to good people. Help her know that she can get through anything that happens to her in her life.” About a year later, her child died.

People were angry with me because they wanted me to pray a prayer of faith over her. I knew that terrible things can happen to anyone.

So when Beth shared how she heard God directing her to visualize her worst fears. She was shocked. But God also reminded her of all the times he had helped her get through times of crises, and to visualize herself emerging triumphant through the trial.

The only issue I have with this article is that she says that she will be re-united with her loved ones who die (that is her worst fear) in heaven–but with a caveat.

“Those of us who are in Christ will also spend eternity with the loved ones who have shared our faith, and this life will seem like a vapor in comparison.”

If I had the above belief–I would be feeling anxious all the time. However, that is another story.

Some things I am doing to alleviate anxiety are:

  • Meditating
  • Praying
  • Walking in nature
  • Dancing (okay, I have been putting that off but right after I write this I am going to put on some of my favorite dance videos)
  • Laughter yoga (I haven’t done enough of this either, but I’m increasing my daily laughter)
  • Singing–in the shower and while walking.
  • Staying in touch with loved ones
  • Writing about things I think will help people on my blog–so I can feel a sense of service while I am quarantining myself (I’ve chosen to do this for various reasons–not because I am afraid of getting the virus or even spreading it.)
  • Working in the garden
  • Doing my cold therapy–Wim Hoff breathing, exercise (sun salutations and a brief run)  cold shower
  • Eating healthy raw vegan food for the most part. Abstaining from any junk food, minimizing cooked food.
  • Working on my long term goal of creating an intentional community
  • Journaling (okay, I haven’t done that either! But I need to!)
  • Sorting out my clutter and getting ready to move.
  • Keeping my environment as clutter free and clean as possible
  • resting and getting a lot of sleep
  • crying and turning my tears into prayers
  • meditating on scriptures

I am falling short at times. Things like making a huge portion of rice and greens (from the garden) and stuffing myself. I’ve only done that once, thank God–it was torture!

Being short-tempered with a friend.

Some days not wanting to go outside–but this is rare, I am happy to say.

Snacking too much. Fortunately, I mostly snack on fruit because I don’t have much food.

Allowing myself to feel hopeless. But somehow, I breath and take that cold shower–amazing how it perks me up!

I am feeling more peace than I have ever felt, and I think it is because I am leaning into the possibility that this slowing down of humanity might help earth to heal. I am also moving towards living more simply than I have ever lived in my life–in a way that really minimizes my footprint. This lifestyle of off the grid living won’t be easy, but my conscience can be clear.

Thanks for reading this–if you have more ideas about how to deal with anxiety during this trying times, please let me know.
