One of the main arguments against nonviolent resistance is that such a thing won’t work with someone like Hitler. Surprisingly (and very little publicity is given to this) Denmark resisted the Nazi’s nonviolently and were one of the least impacted countries by Nazi occupation. You can read about that here.
Jesus teachings are practical. Now, it has become increasingly acknowledged that nonviolent resistance is more effective than violence. You can read an article about that here.
Guns will not be owned or present in the community. We will study and develop strategies for non-violent resistance such as these that are taught in this course. Here is an article which describes the successful strategic nonviolence practiced by a woman who is face with an intruder in her home.
Our prayers and cultivation such a positive, loving, spiritual vibration as we live a life a love–will be something that we will hope will protect us. This has happened in the past.
I felt inspired to write this blog post after reading this review of a book where the authors seek to prove that the Christian martyr, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a Lutheran pastor who lived during the time of Hitler’s regime, did not engage in a conspiracy to assassinate Hitler. Bonhoeffer’s sacrificial life where he taught people to put Christ and becoming like Christ at the center of Christianity.
I am very inspired by the Society of Friends, or Quakers. which was founded by George Fox. He believed that the civil war between good and evil was not external but internal, a spiritual war within every human being and that the only way to overcome the external evils in the world is to overcome inner evil by following the Inner Light, and to act in loving, nonviolent ways. He believed that Truth is in everyone and that we each have a responsibility to listen, attune ourselves and act on that inner Light which he recognized as God.
The Anabaptists are a very small percentage of Christians today, yet their beliefs align more with the increasingly non-violent social movements that are rising up. Most non-Christians don’t realize how similar they are to Christ, and the teachings of the Anabaptists when they promote their nonviolent ways.
This is just one paragraph from an informative and inspiring article from The Plough where I read about the Anabaptist’s history.
“In 1527, the Anabaptist leader Michael Sattler was charged in his heresy trial with abetting the Islamic invasion of Europe by refusing to fight – an accusation that sounds eerily contemporary. Sattler replied: “If the Turks should come, we ought not to resist them. For it is written, ‘Thou shalt not kill.’ We must not defend ourselves against the Turks and others of our persecutors, but are to beseech God with earnest prayer to repel and resist them.”5
We can learn to tune into our guardian angels with prayers and other ways. I learned about guardian angels in this article, and this paragraph is an excerpt:
“Guardian angels also work to protect you from physical danger, if doing so would help accomplish God’s purposes for your life.
The Torah and the Bible record in Daniel chapter 6 that an angel “shut the mouths of the lions” (verse 22) that would otherwise have maimed or killed the prophet Daniel, who had been wrongly thrown into a lions’ den.
Another dramatic rescue by a guardian angel occurs in Acts chapter 12 of the Bible, when the apostle Peter, who had been wrongly imprisoned, is awakened in his cell by an angel who causes the chains to fall off Peter’s wrists and leads him out of the prison to freedom.”
As our community meditates together, and we learn to love each other and all of life with pure agape love, I believe we will be able to find divine protection from angels. This article provides scriptures from the Bible that can help us.
I believe that angels have protected me throughout my life. I am glad to be reminded of their presence. They are ready to help us with our nonviolent resistance.
Here is just one story of many that demonstrate how nonviolence and prayer can help. I didn’t like the part where the person cuts off the head of a possum–not exactly nonviolent. Perhaps this shows that God is merciful even when we are ignorant.
I’ve heard many stories of angels guarding places. I am going to start praying more for protection for Wellspring. Here is one of those stories.
