Practice: Rewilding

Rewilding–the vegan version: I have been intrigued reading about rewilding. However, there doesn’t seem to be a vegan version, so I’m going to start the trend! Most people into rewilding seem to be into hunting and  fishing. Of course that is not part of the vegan value system. From what I understand, the rewilding movement is very positive and helpful.

“Like our environment, which is forever altered due to human intervention, human nature has also been irrevocably shifted. Rewilding isn’t about trying to go back to living as hunter-gatherers. Rather, it is about examining our cultural paradigms, seeing how they affect our physical, mental, and emotional health, and reclaiming our birthright as human beings.” Read more here.

Vision: Please join me in imagining a community where we practice the values of rewilding…

Our community is amazing as we see people walking barefoot in the snow. In the summer, we don’t need air conditioning, or even fans. We love to adjust to the temperatures and enjoy the different qualities that come with the seasons. It is easy for us to go down to the lake in the winter and take a quick swim! Bathing in cold water is such a health benefit.

We are one of the first vegan communities which use all the principles of rewilding–which of course, excludes hunting, fishing, trapping or any kind of killing of animals. Vegan rewilding is becoming ever more popular as people realize that herding and in any way hunting animals is hurtful. Just because people used to do this doesn’t mean they were living naturally!

We’ve become experts at gathering every single kind of wild edible on the property and in the neighborhood. We love teaching people what we learn, too. Using vegan permaculture methods of helping the land return to an even more flourishing state by creating food forests is also yielding much more wild food.

The children enjoy being outside most of the time, as do adults. we even do a lot of our office work outside in screened in enclosures. It won’t be long until we learn how to even live in harmony with the flies, wasps, mosquitos which sometimes annoy us.

Many of us have created totally natural houses–tree houses, little huts, even underground homes–using methods learned from people who practiced these skills for hundreds if not thousands of years.

There are endless possibilities for living out the rewilding value and we are enjoying learning from the many experts who want to come and learn our vegan ways.

Here is an article about rewilding our environment that was written from a vegan perspective: “This concept is rewilding. It is the restoration of our natural ecosystem, which has been destroyed by centuries of agriculture and land management practices, and is the reintroduction of life to our green yet lifeless countryside.” Read more herein the Plant Based News.

Rewilding our cities with REI Coop’s help: ““What if we reimagined how people connect to the outdoors in cities, and how the outdoors connects to cities?” challenges Kristen Ragain, philanthropy and community partnership manager for REI. Over the course of the past several years, this question has inspired a new line of community investment and partnering by REI—what we call our Rewilding Projects.Read more here:

This article is excellent from Positive News: “We don’t often think of ourselves as being domesticated. The word falls easily from our human lips when we talk of animals and plants, but are we ourselves also tame? As the natural world has been eternally altered by mankind’s intervention, have we curtailed human nature in the same way?” Read more here.

Rewilding fundamentals: It amazing how many values that I hold are included in rewilding. This article offers specific actions to rewilding that we will practice in our community. “Rewilding is not about aggressive rebellion and anarchy, it is about becoming aware and seeking sustainable and rejuvenative solutions to the problems we currently face through cooperative community.  But neither is it about being passive and apathetic—regaining feral temperament is needed for humans to protect the remaining vestiges of wilderness.  At its core, rewilding is reminding humans that they are part of the biosphere, and though a unique and very special part of it, they are not a master race with dominion over it.  I consider the following principles to be the “ten commandments” of rewilding, and they are what guide me on my path to becoming a whole human.” Arthur Haines.
