How to grow potatoes

I will be growing lots of potatoes because they are easy to grow, and because they are a survival crop. They grow well in cool weather as well.

Here is one way to grow them in bags: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/edible/vegetables/potato/growing-potatoes-in-bags.htm

Here is another suggestion from the Ozark Herbalist:

“Put your seed potatoes about four inches deep. Potatoes should be planted in rows about 12 inches apart and at a depth of about 4 inches. Build up the soil along the rows, forming a mound. Potatoes should be far enough apart that they shouldn’t run into each other underground as they grow.”

My friend Pam says on our gardening chat group:

Potatoes are cheap at the store, but homegrown are much better! Plant some onions, too! They are almost unfreezable outside!

Also, I say–potatoes are MUCH more nutritious when you grow them yourself. And, there will be no GMO’s or built in pesticides. Yuck!

Pam adds:

I’m going to cut some organic potatoes into egg sized pieces, each piece having at least one “eye”that will sprout . When the cuts dry ( they are already sprouting) I’ll plant them.

I say–hurray for Pam who started our gardening chat group!

Here is a Ruth Stout method of planting potatoes.
