I base my belief in reincarnation on scientific evidence and teachings from the Bible.
This article goes into great detail about how the Bible teaches reincarnation as well as other proofs that reincarnation was an accepted belief by the Jews during the time of Jesus. I don’t believe that Jesus is the reincarnation of Adam and Moses, as this article states. I do believe that Jesus was God incarnate.
When I first head of the idea of reincarnation from a Buddhist who came to give a talk to our youth group in the Methodist church, I still vividly remember having a sense that reincarnation answered many questions I had about life. For example, why do some people come into this life with so many talents, many at an early age. I was able to sing harmonies as early as age 7. My parents and siblings did not have a lot of musical talent. Why would i have such a gift? Also, it made sense to me that we get many chances to grow. If the purpose of life is to be the best version of ourselves that we can be–as I believed at the time–shouldn’t we get many chances?
As a Christian, I believe that reincarnation makes sense because it seems like God in his mercy would want people to have many chances to become “conformed into the image of Christ” as Paul says we are supposed to be. Some people die young. Some have had horrible lives where they never experienced love. So many people have not come into contact with loving Christians who could help them to heal their wounds and become emotionally, spiritually, physically healthy. Should they not get another chance to learn about how to be like Jesus?
Or take the example of my grandson, Gideon. He died at age 9 months because he had 2 heart defects. The doctors said that the only reason he lived that long was because one defect counterbalanced the other defect. I theorize that he came into the world for a specific purpose, and when he was done with that purpose, he got to return to heavenly realms. He really seemed like a wise saint even as a baby. The Buddhist concept of a boddisatva is described as follows: ” An enlightened being who, out of compassion, forgoes nirvana in order to save others.”
We don’t have this concept in Christianity, yet I think it is possible that some, if not all, of the early church fathers and the disciple of Jesus have reincarnated because they yearn to help us to follow Jesus. And don’t we need all the help we can get?
I hope you will read this article which goes into great detail about a man who spent most of his life researching reincarnation in a very methodical, scientific way. There are actually many books which offer proof that reincarnation is a reality that is scientifically proven.
I found this review of the book: I so appreciate the author of this article from Soul Jam. He writes about how he used to shun the idea of reincarnation but gradually accepted this idea after much research, including the book, Reincarnation in Christianity: A new vision of rebirth in Christian Thought by Geddes MacGregor. This review of the book really sums up the importance of reincarnation as an explanation of how we can achieve the goal of becoming Christ-like.
Being a Christian Universalist, vegan and a believer in reincarnation, has brought me persecution and rejection. As a vegan Christian, I was rejected by leaders in the Christian vegan movement because of my beliefs in universalism and reincarnation. As a Christian, I was rejected for my beliefs in universalism and reincarnation. I have not shared about my beliefs in reincarnation with my CU acquaintances, but I am going to do so in the near future.
As i consider embracing the eastern orthodox tradition, I am asking a Father if I can be orthodox and believe in reincarnation. I await the answer. As far as I can tell, it is considered a heretical teaching. Here is one article that explains why the author does not believe in reincarnation, and quotes someone as saying that the idea of reincarnation is anathema. I thought the proof was poor, and the appearance of the person who wrote it–well, he looks kind of grouchy. That should be proof in itself, yes? Ha ha!
I don’t understand why reincarnation is so widely rejected by Christians. Maybe in past lives they believed in reincarnation and were burned at the stake.
When I learn that something is true because I research the facts and come to the conclusion that I can believe something based on concrete evidence–even the idea that Jesus is God–I can’t just throw away my belief because it is unpopular. The “Jesus is God” idea is unpopular among my non-Christian friends. However, they do not reject me because of that belief!
Well, as always, I am happy when I start writing an article because I am motivated and inspired to do deep research. I had no ideas there was a whole book on Christianity and reincarnation, as well as a book about Origen and his beliefs in reincarnation. I am very drawn to Origen, and the book segment that is available for free talks about his life.
I hope you enjoyed reading this. I would enjoy hearing your thoughts about reincarnation in regards to Christianity. If you can prove that I am wrong about it with really good evidence, I will consider it. But after 50 years of researching this concept, it might be a bit difficult to persuade me that I am mistaken.
