Transition Town is all about resiliency. I was glad to receive the email below from them. I first heard about Transition town when the movie Peak Oil was out. Although the predictions for running out of oil have not manifested, the possibility of the peak oil crises spurred Rob Hopkins and his other co-founders to create an organization which could help communities become more resilient in every way.
I attended the weekly Berkeley crop swaps, sponsored by Berkeley Transition, about 20 times, and it was amazing how much free, freshly picked, home-grown produce I would come away with!
I will be studying this and other transition town ideas to help our community and the entire neighborhood become more self-sustaining. Our neighborhood was formed because of people wanting to prepare for Y2K, so people in this neck of the woods are already thinking along these lines.
I hope you enjoy this. Let me know your ideas for creating an action plan ad dealing constructively with the Coronavirus.

Along with YOU, our registered user base, The Transition has been creating tomorrow, today through our online platform and offline actions. We have all been witness to how companies and the media have recognized that the Covid-19 Pandemic has orchestrated a crash course on how to adapt a healthier lifestyle by working from home and staying at home in solidarity to prevent further spread of this illness.
Here are some resources to help you cope with the current pandemic and financial crisis:
Resource I. Your Action Plan
Your Action Plan shows how well you can improve your personal growth, your organization, your business, and/or your passion project through current and future crises.
- Shifting the paradigm from me to we – shifting the paradigm to a mutual aid network will create a public safety net which is needed in times like these
- How to craft a productive mindset – This concept is currently being changed by the situation at large, individuals and their practices are facing a lifestyle redesign which the Transition currently uses: utilizing the digital world over the physical. With the Transition, we grow and support our members through online and grassroots cellular communication
- Mental Health Fundamentals – The Action Plan focuses on self-improvement because we know having a healthy mindset creates a healthy world
- Inspiration – The Covid-19 Pandemic has inspired many people across the world to prioritize community solutions, which Your Action Plan was designed to implement
- An online inventory of our web user’s skill-sets – knowing the resources of the individuals around you – on and offline – is imperative for survival
- The ability to locate like-minded people near you – Find individuals near you who are engaged with the Transition and you can partner with to create community-solution Buds
- Nonviolent Communication Training – Our digital materials help individuals naturally look out for one another’s’ well being and create win-win outcomes – this can, of course, be correlated with the issue of supply and demand of essentials in times like these: i.e. face masks, toilet paper, and grocery shortages
- Learning how to share our power with others instead of using our power over others, in order to facilitate an environment where all parties feel equally honored, valued, respected, and safe.
- Resource database of tangible and intangible items – With Covid-19 causing businesses and organizations to switch over to the online realm – resource databases like ours are more important now than ever. As other databases may leave gaps of unmet needs, ours is ever-growing based on the physical and social resources of our network
- Food Locator – Users are able to update and share what resources are available in their community in relation to food insecurity

Resource II: Highlander History and Principles of Mutual Aid recorded Webinar
Been hearing a lot about mutual aid lately? Wonder where it comes from and what the principles behind it are? Hear from folks on the frontlines of mutual aid, on this webinar, as they support everyone in learning about this powerful survival tool.
Resource III: Community Toolkit
Here is a community toolkit that you can use to implement your Covid solutions and tools for your community
Resource IV: Living Example
Here is how one member of the Transition is helping her Community:
Victoria Hewlett of Johnson City, Tennessee, USA has created a Facebook mutual aid network for her region of Tennessee. Its purpose is to help people channel their energies on being proactive in sharing needs, resources, and helpful information while also lending emotional support.

We’ve always believed it is better to plan and be prepared, than be taken by surprise, as many are now experiencing. For those of you who have already started Your Action Plan you are aware of the potential power it can have when thousands if not millions of people are actively doing it, so please spread the word and get as many people in your network enrolled NOW! The very things it goes over are indeed survival tools for something as globally impacting as wide spread disease. The more people enrolled the safer and more secure we become.Turns out there is a lot of resiliency in an organization like ours that operates online as much as it is offline!
In Solidarity,
The Transition Team
