I’ve never started a healing center before. So I thought I would write about this topic of qualifications both for me and others who want to explore joining me in starting such a thing. I know I can’t do this by myself!
Every since I was a kid I have liked to organize activities and spaces. Then from ninth to 12th grade I was a class officer, and I loved being part of a leadership team. We raised so much money for our class that we had a surplus at the end of the year. As treasurer and secretary, I organized a lot of the fundraising projects. Learning to backpack with two other friends when I was in college gave me a spirit of adventure and love of figuring out planning rather complicated and detail oriented projects such as going backpacking for 5 days. At age 18, I planned my trip to Europe which ended up being a 13 month journey to the East. I got a one way ticket, and didn’t go on a group tour because I wanted to be free to do what I wanted to do.
As I recall these things in my more formative years, I notice the pattern that has been with me my whole life. If I decide I want to do something, and I have never done it, I just do it! I find mentors or resources who can help me to do certain things, and I am willing to learn from others. At the same time, I always had my own creative insights as to how to make whatever I was doing unique, efficient, and simple. And another common denominator was that I was passionate about the project so I did not give up on the project until it was completed.
Almost all my projects were about finding the right team to carry out the project. For example, I had no experience being a choir director in the church I was attending when I was about 32 years old. After being a choir member for about 2 years under two different directors, I realized that I was not enjoying the experience, even though I loved to sing with others. When the second director quit, I was given the opportunity to be the director. I could not read music very well, but I had a good ear and other talents. I recruited people for the choir, then appoint two experienced people to lead the bass and alto groups. Most people could not read music either, but they could sing on key. I did many other innovative things, and this choir was amazing. I led it for 8 years, and it was one of the most successful things I have ever done because we built a community of people who loved to be together as well as sing together.
The main reason I quite was because when I birthed my first child, I just felt overwhelmed by the responsibility. I share this because in a way, I want to reassure you and myself that I have done many things in my 70 years of life that I have never done, but with good mentors and team members, I have succeeded in doing some very successful things. I have never started a holistic healing center, but I believe that if I can find the right team of people who can carry out various roles. With 50 years of practicing principles of natural healing to add to my extensive experiences, I feel hopeful that I can get this project off the ground along with the intergenerational school, Christian monastery, and intentional community. No, I have never started any of those things, but I want to attract mentors and team members who have the ability to help me get them off the ground.
